Upcoming Event: Democratic Republicanism and the Left
Hey, blog subscribers. Lucas and I thank you all for supporting the project and engaging with these ideas. It means a lot! Also, I’m happy to let you know that on Tuesday, April 16, at 9:30 PM EST, I’ll present to the East Bay DSA about the continued spread of democratic-republican ideas within (what exists of) the U.S. left.
This link allows you to register for the event. It also provides a Zoom link and recommended readings.
This is part two of EBDSA’s series on the Constitution. In part one, Ian discussed the document’s numerous undemocratic ulcers. Ian’s presentation was excellent, and we hope to republish his talk in this blog.
In this presentation, I’ll discuss the history of political agitation in classical Marxism. Socialists used to talk quite a bit about political structures. Their strategy centered around achieving a democratic constitution in all countries, including the U.S., that lacked universal and equal rights. I’ll also discuss U.S. history and ask why native movements for democracy, such as the Civil Rights Movement and the New Left, failed to discuss the Constitution.
Hope to see you all there!
Luke
