Two-Part Zoom Event: The Constitution and Democracy
Featuring blog authors Ian Forgie and Luke Pickrell
This Sunday at 1 EST, join us for part one of a two-part series on the Constitution and democracy, co-hosted by Cosmonaut Magazine and Marxist Unity Group. In part one, Ian Forgie (author of this article) will provide a primer on the Constitution’s structural provisions, including various Executive powers and a malapportioned bicameral legislature. Ian will argue that the Constitution is an undemocratic document that empowers a political minority at the expense of the popular majority. Audience Q and A will follow the presentation. Register here.
On Sunday the 18th at 1 EST, Luke Pickrell will discuss Marxism's democratic republicanism and the lessons we can take from past movements in the U.S., including the Civil Rights Movement and the New Left. Luke will argue that the classic Marxist strategy of achieving a democratic republic as a form of class rule is still relevant because the U.S. is not a democracy. Works by Marx and Engels, Eugene Debs, Rosa Luxemburg, C Wright Mills, Tom Hayden, and Martin Luther King, Jr. will be discussed. Audience Q and A will follow the presentation. Register here.
