Luke speaks with Gil Schaeffer about the Democratic Constitution Blog’s reader, “Equal Human and Political Rights and Democratic Republicanism.” Their conversation encompasses several topics, such as the reader’s origins, the foundations of universal and equal rights, insights from Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement, and the importance of a political strategy focused on winning the fight for democracy.
Gil has authored several articles for the Democratic Constitution Blog, including “Democratic Political Movements, Democratic Electoral Rules, and Socialism: A Reply to Daniel Lazare,” “The Democratic Constitution Strategy Is the Blueprint for a New Party; This Means Voting for Democrats in 2024, Even Biden,” and “Marxism Is Democratic Republicanism: The History of the Struggle for Equal Human and Political Rights From the Inside Out.” Last year, Gil spoke with his DSA chapter about Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the anti-war movement, Marx and Engels, Lenin, and the ongoing struggle for a democratic constitution based on universal and equal rights. Luke had a more extensive conversation with Gil about his political development and his paper, “You Can’t Use Weatherman to Show Which Way the Wind Blew: The Unfinished History of the New Left: Participatory Democracy, Marxism, and the Goal of a Democratic Constitution,” during a 2023 interview.
